Craft Medium:  Metal, Glass

Artist Statement

Designing and creating jewelry from wire is close to an obsession for me; it’s something I have to do. I think it’s a kind of therapy; there is something about working with wire that I find absorbing, soothing, and totally satisfying. The possibilities of wire, which is really just a line, are endless as far as I can tell. The wire itself, in my hands, is an inspiration to me. Making handmade glass beads creates a similar feeling of satisfaction; there is just something about that torch and the glass as it melts and becomes a bead that is mesmerizing. Because I love the weighty feel of heavy wire and big beads, most of the pieces I create are substantial, generally not for the faint of heart. Laura Teague

Artist Biography

Laura Teague is a Baton Rouge-based jewelry artist who works with sterling silver, copper and gold wire as well as beads made from those metals in addition to gemstones and her own handmade glass beads. All of the rings and other wire components used in the jewelry are handmade by Laura. The wire is twisted, coiled and woven by hand into substantial, functional and sometimes elaborate pieces. She finds immense pleasure in the feel of the wire in her hands as it transforms into unique pieces, stating that “the wire itself inspires the design” of each piece.

The first Saturday of each month, Laura and her jewelry can usually be found at the Baton Rouge Arts Market. She also participates in juried local festivals such as the Baton Rouge FestForAll as well as the Festival Acadiens et Creoles and the Festival International in Lafayette. Laura is a juried member of the Louisiana Crafts Guild and the Mississippi Craftsmen’s Guild and her wire jewelry has been published in The Wire Artist.

In addition to the LSU Museum Store in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Laura Teague Jewelry can be found at the Sans Souci Fine Arts Gallery in Lafayette, the Imperial Calcasieu Museum in Lake Charles and the store at The Barnwell Center in Shreveport.
