Artist Biography:
Someone once said, “never lose your childhood wonder” and I have been holding onto those words for quite some time. It applies to the artist in all of us and allows us to explore.
I am a self taught artist but the phrase, self taught is limited, as other artists teach you about your work. The medium teaches us about our work as well, when I weave, I always say there are two weavers, myself and the loom. As an artist we are always learning from each other our medium and the environment around us.
Spiritualism is a big part of my work, either from dreams in the receiving of answers or those “ah-ha” moments when we just know what will work and what will not. I have great faith in the Great Spirit, The “others”, psychic work, meditation, alternative medicine, herbs, etc. We need all the help we can get!
I currently view myself as a photographer, weaver / spinner, mask maker, voodoo doll maker, painter and folk artist. I enjoy the play in these fields and they allow for more experimentation within the medium, sometimes serious and sometimes whimsical. Sometimes art is produced just for the enjoyment and fun, it is not always serious and I do not feel that one should look at art from a ego and empirical standpoint. Look at it, and take away the enjoyment of having experienced that particular piece.
My masks are currently gourd based and American Indian dance and dream influenced while my Voodoo dolls are New Orleans influenced, my paintings and photography come from my travels around the world and my weavings influenced from the joy of color and how they interact and how the wool feels on your hands. We don’t make art because we want to; we do it because we have to!
My work has been shown at galleries in Lafayette, Shreveport, Baton Rouge and Alexandria. Shows have been in the Alexandria Museum, The Barnwell Center and Art Space in Shreveport. Michael Boicourt
