Craft Medium:  Clay

Artist's Statement: 50 POUND BAGS OF EARTHS CLAY ARE WEDGED, DIVIDED AND SHAPED. I COMBINE WHEEL THROWING AND HAND BUILDING TECHNIQUES TO CREATE MY ...
“BASIC CLAY CANVASES”
I USE SEVERAL TECHNIQUES FOR MY CURRENT THEMES.
THROWN THEN ALTERED CYLINDERS,
ROLLED AND SCULPTED TILES AND HAND BUILDING.
MY FORMS BEGIN TO TELL THEIR STORIES AS THEY ARE SHAPED, ALTERED, SCULPTED, CARVED, AND IMPRINTED. EACH PIECE IS SLOWLY DRIED THEN KILN FIRED. NEXT I HAND PAINT EACH WITH GLAZES THAT WILL MELT INTO COLORFUL GLASS DURING THE RAKU FIRING. THIS RAKU FIRING PROCESS ALSO CARBONIZES OR SMOKES UNGLAZED AREAS ADDING A RICH MATT BLACK CONTRAST. ONLY FIVE TO EIGHT PIECES ARE RAKU FIRED AT A TIME. THIS PROCESS IS VERY HANDS ON -DEPENDENT ON TIMING, TEMPERATURE AND EXPERIENCE.

Artist Bio

Joy Gauss is a full time clay artist in New Orleans. She has lived in New Orleans for 25 years because where else can you live in a turquoise house , parade with a bone gang and play with clay to make a living?

She first discovered her love of ceramics at the University of Missouri and later continued her education and growth by joining the Kansas City Clay Guild and attending workshops. She has taught over 1000 children the art of clay play through camps and summer programs.

Joy’s original RAKU fired clay sculptures can be seen locally in New Orleans at the Dutch Alley Artist’s Co-Op, Kako Gallery on Royal Street and Judy's at the Rink. With New Orleans themes of the Bone Gangs, Damsels, Musicians and Mardi Gras Indians her art shares the memories and magic of New Orleans.
