Craft Medium:  Clay, Fiber

Artist's Statement: I join a long line of artisans, stretching back into prehistory, with our common urge to adorn and enhance our lives. I gain deep satisfaction as I create objects of beauty, simplicity and ingenuity using clay and other materials at hand. I find pleasure in seeing, touching and sharing the products of my competence as an observant, artful human.

Artist Biography:
Clay has been my medium for artistic expression since 1980, when I enrolled in a ceramics course at Louisiana College upon my return to the United States after twenty years abroad. I draw my inspiration and materials from the places where I have lived or traveled. My years in Central America provided Mayan sources and designs. From the Middle East I drew from a rich Mediterranean cultural stew of historical designs as well as native plant and animal life. Rural Louisiana has been my home for the past thirty years. The woods surrounding my home provide plant life fresh and ready for use as impressions as well as local wildlife for close observation. As secondary sources I find designs in museum catalogs and art history reference books, as well as in current newspapers, travel brochures and magazines. I see usable designs everywhere.
My educational background includes organ and piano studies at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music; introductory courses in art, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and architectural history at San Carlos University in Guatemala City; and a B.A. from Louisiana College with an interdisciplinary major in Art, Music, and English.

As a member of the Louisiana Crafts Guild I display and sell my work in their Sans Souci Gallery in Lafayette and in their galleries in River Oaks Square in Alexandria, in the Garden and Art Center Store in Shreveport, and in the Gift Shop at Hodges Garden State Park. I have participated successfully at arts and crafts fairs in Leesville, Natchitoches, Alexandria, Lake Charles, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans. In May 2008 one of my pendants PISCES was juried into the Southern Open. It was the only piece of jewelry among 105 works in the exhibit on display at the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette
