Artist Biography:
I have been interested in art for as long as I can remember. My mother was very encouraging of my talents and my desire to develop them. I want to share the knowledge that was shared with me, with up and coming young artists. This is why I became a teacher of the arts. In addition to drawing and painting, I discovered a love for making delicately detailed items, wearable art, mainly jewelry. From the age of fourteen, I was designing and selling my jewelry creations. I made pieces out of everything; then I discovered my true medium…glass.
I am a glass beadmaker, a lampworker to be precise. I work with a Minor Burner bench torch and make Lampworked Glass beads. Each bead is made one at a time and is a small piece of artwork. With my beads, I am able to make an endless array of original glass pieces for my line of jewelry, Riehl Hot Beads.
For the past eleven years I have been involved in “Pyromania”, an annual event showcasing all fire generated arts and artists. I was made the small glass chairperson for the glass beadmaking crew at Pyromania 2004, and my students, volunteers, and I, teach over 200+ kids ranging in age from 9-79, how to make glass beads on the torch over the course of one weekend. It is awesome! The whole event is centered on educating the public, (especially our youth) and exposing them to fire-generated art forms. This event broadens their awareness of the arts in our community in general as well.
I have participated in many events demonstrating glass beadmaking and displaying my wares at events such as, the Smithsonian Train, the Baton Rouge Arts Market, The Covington Art Walk, Sense of Taste, Festival Acadian, and Festival International de Louisiane, and was invited to attend the Mississippi Craft Guilds Chimneyville 2005 show.

At present, I teach art full-time to amazing students who always seem to impress upon me the great things art makes possible in our lives. I teach all levels of art from Art I to Advanced Placement Art IV at St. Thomas More High School. I am married to a wonderful man, Bill, and I have an awesome, eleven year old son, Sam. When do I do my beadwork, my painting, my drawing, my own art? What can I give up? I work when I should be sleeping!
