Artist Statement

My name is Joy Bonin and I am from New Iberia. I recycle materials such as leather, fabric swatches, old jeans, buttons, lace, neckties, belts, and buckles to make handbags, pouches, sling bags, small festival bags, bracelets, Christmas stockings, and grocery bag holders. Everything I make is unique, no two items are exactly alike. I love collecting the materials as much as I love making the items. I am a perfectionist when it comes to sewing. I will not sell something that I am not completely satisfied with and proud of. I have been sewing for over 45 years and have been selling at shows around the state for about 6 years.

My name is Joy Freyou Bonin and I am married to Mike Bonin who is a woodworker. We have 3 children and and 3 grandchildren. I was an elementary school teacher in Iberia Parish for over 30 years. I have been sewing, crocheting and involved in art for 50 years. I learned to sew from my mom and crochet from my grandmother. As a teacher, I tried to incorporate art into as many lessons as possible. I was involved with the Very Special Arts Festival in Iberia Parish for 10 years. More recently, I have helped with our high school musicals, making costumes, props and finishing sets.
