Artist's Statement: The path that led to my becoming an artist began in the Catholic Church that I grew up attending with my family every Sunday. That set of religious experiences (coupled with the fascination which has remained with me) serves as the foundation for much of my inspiration- leaving me with a banquet of mental images that guide my artistic aesthetic.
In addition to the architecture, gilding, and ornament found in the Church, I am also naturally drawn to cemeteries-- particularly to the uniqueness of those scattered throughout New Orleans. I am captivated by the mysterious beauty and sense of tranquility these places convey to me and often adorn my ceramic pieces using molds, many of which have been pressed during my visits to cemeteries.
In many ways, I view my work as a type of self-prescribed penance. While the subject of my work is religious in nature, “saintly” is in no way a word that could be used to describe who I am. Because of this fact, however, I always have cause to be in the studio continuing my atonement.
